Macbook Pro 2008 problem

hello

have 15 inch macbook pro 2008 model(the model before ones released in october). @ time 1 highest specifications, 2gb ram, 2,5ghz dual core t9300, geforce 8600m gt 512 mb etc.

has been working smoothly in past years , run vmware fusion windows bootcamp partiotion running in background. lately has been slow , running vmware fusion near useless. formatted laptop first time , installed vmware fusion , ran again, there no difference. still slow.

question is, causes slowness software working fine before? because laptop 4 years old , components might have been damaged(ie.heat)? or has vmware fusion system requirements changed? or because running lion?

, if hardware issue, worth upgrading?

quite disappointed formatting, because thought make laptop faster (like when format windows pc), remained same.

how old hard drive? "might" hints of failing hdd or might 1 of ram sticks failing; said tried reformat, have been experiencing slowness other applications or uses? recommend backing data if haven't.

what do?

1. run smart test hdd

2. run memtest check our ram
