2008 Imac Problem

i started having problem 2008 24" intel core 2 duo imac , hoping maybe on here might know source of problem is. have 4gb of ram, , stock 320 gb hd , have never had problems until month ago or so.

while watching movie files via front row whenever watch 30 minutes or freeze , have let "relax" 20 minutes before trying go watching video. freeze (pinwheel) while doing simple tasks using finder. example, anytime open finder , click on applications take minute before load, again pinwheeling during duration.

work in video production , run fcp after effects without problems whatsoever bit perplexing me.

i'm wondering if hard drive on it's way out or possibly logic board/gpu having issues due heat? advice appreciated, thank you!

edit: also, when copying files external hd using firewire 800 internal drive stop , stutter going 16mb increments 2mb increments, why thought perhaps hd either fail or possibly overheating. haven't tried watch video file straight external hd suppose see how goes. again, sorted out machine @ moment , use heavily daily because so.

first ...backup ...

external hd , backup.

after perform system check.

use tech tool pro, create e drive, , perform hardware check on mac hd.

far till no issues, pls backup first...
