Caged Animal Experience

well, i'm looking purchase caged pet in near future (tomorrow). living situation allows me keep 1 , spend enough time type of animal shouldn't lonely or poorly kept. i'm wanting smart (no hamsters, gerbils, bunnies) not hard take care of. best option looks pet rat, wondering if owned 1 , recommend getting one. i'm looking @ getting chinchilla, not sure how trainable are.
