Networking

hi

i'm new forum , in need of help. have reasonable knowledge of computers in general have little understanding of networking. have 2 laptops , air in addition 2 ipads , iphones. watch tv shows or movies plugging hard drive ps3 or xbox.

after here advice on please. set network can save devices , stream media central location. have been doing reading , think nas might best way go. thinking synology 212j, think meet needs? other advice or information think might need appreciated example i'm not sure understand benefit of gigabyte ethernet , cat5 cables.

the benefit of gigabit ethernet cabling is faster wifi. can pain wire depending on house. cat5 pretty standard cable.

while store media in nas box, doesn't serve devices in way like. media files accessed, wouldn't stream. you'd need kind of media server. desktop mac, access files stored on nas , stream them other devices. plex.

or there network boxes serve media servers.
