Refurbed air or....

i have brand new macbook pro (non-retina, high def screen) , have relegated 2 year old mbp (15 incher) bringing along work me non-work things, such internet searches, or reference books.

it's bit large , obvious on desk, plus little heavier i'd (though far being 17 inch hp.) toying idea of refurb air apple store use instead. 1 of basic ones- no more 850 list. there of later core2 machines, , basic i5 ones 4gb ram fit price.

light surfing (no gaming) , rare light use of windows vm, these machines still viable? not positive yet i'll invest in one, curious. mbp have (2.53ghz i5, 500 gig hd, 8 gb ram , standard glossy) new, , doing okay, i'm thinking of smaller 1 convenience.

ideas welcome. i've got number of options @ home already- couple of netbooks, have ipad bring has bluetooth keyboard, , older windows laptops well. far, mbp if favorite. bit large.

to honest, first thought suggest ipad. reference books (pdf?), internet searches (over 3g/lte avoid corporate network if needed), etc. should work well. doesn't windows vm though, unless used splashtop or other remote-desktop reach machine @ home -- though how workable depends on needed do.

own 13" mba (2011) , have used parallels light vm stuff -- it's decent 4gb memory, wouldn't try 2gb systems. whether 11" screen workable you, can't bad given how popular thing is.
