Macbook Giving the Almost full when it still has 600gb left

i've ran problem macbook pro (late 2011) giving "your startup disk full" window when have 600gb or available. scanned disk scanner , added 160 used, though mac self says theres 643gb used. cleaned cashes etc. no luck other quicker boot time (need clean caches more apparently) os bug, possibly hidden 500gb file cant find? be.. helpful!

for space issues not explained above, there few things can try, of may or may not apply:

• begin restarting computer first step. resolves issues.
• for time machine users on notebooks running lion, space may being consumed time machine local snapshots, can disabled.
  os x lion: time machine's "local snapshots" on portable macs
• search finder see if space being consumed large file or several large files. adjust 50gb in illustration whatever size deem appropriate.

• use omnidisksweeper, jdisk report, disk inventory x, daisydisk or grandperspective see how space being used on drive. of these apps may show more detail others, try several.
• check drive disk utility: using disk utility verify or repair disks
• try re-indexing drive: spotlight: how re-index folders or volumes
