that infamous "preparing..."

so here waiting…

few words of why writing post.

so writing post highlight of absurd “preparing” things mac osx without applying common sense:

  • timemachine should have “just backup now” button bypasses “preparing”.
  • when compressing large files in close full disk, zip says “preparing” , goes on several minutes, later state there insufficient disk space. since ziped file should not exceed size of composing files, difficulty of doing immediate sanity check of disk availability.
  • when on move mac portable, mail application inevitably attempts “synchronize mailboxes” leading endless process. ok, short one-liner email sits in outbox waiting if marked high priority. how empty outbox first option.
  • when transferring large files (say 3 files), finder shows close immobile progress bar , 1 of 3… there absolutely no real cue progress. progress should in volume of data in these cases
  • etc.

please apple, please test apps in true usage mode, somewhere outside of comfortable offices.

RAID in Early 2009 Mac Pro

being "tech guy" of house, brother has requested upgrade 4,1 mac pro. has: 2 x 2.26 quad-core xenons 12 gb ram 3 x geforce gt 120 4 x 2 tb hdd's in software raid 10 80 gb ssd in 1 of optical bays boot disk. uses computer video editing, in final cut pro x, he'll dabble in adobe suite. said wants more speed , needs less storage; i.e., doesn't need main drive more 2 tb. budget not issue here, future-proofing is: don't want have upgrade long time. ram upgrade simple enough, right? head on owc , grab 24 or 32 gb of whatever goes 4,1 generation mac pro. video cards know next nothing about. don't quite understand why he's got 3 of them for; monitor 30 in. cinema display. should upgrade video card(s)? maybe raedon 5770 or 5870? feel video editing isn't gpu-intensive, if is, please tell me so. now, fun part storage. figure best solution 4 new ssd's replace 12 tb ones, , stick ssds in raid 0. question is: n...
