Sluggish MBP

my macbook pro has been gradually slowing down. several years old , figured natural consequense of time , use. however, when upgraded snow leopard lion things came near standstill. battery life bottomed out. have reset pram , smc. odd glitches in fan , backlight seem have disappeared system still running slowly. verdict still out on battery life. i'm first time poster i'm sure i'm missing system info may need me figure out issue. let me know else needed , i'll post it. in advance!
system info gathered nothing running (that see) except finder , activity monitor.
