Airport Express vs Extreme question

sorry if little wordy have weird network want upgrade , looking advice. here have:
1. wired router won't changed. need work , happy it.
2. airport extreme gen 3 in basement in bridge mode. set wireless networks "wireless2.4" , "wireless5". have several usb drives attached it. use chronosync make backup copies of video collection these drives. i'm happy setup because in basement signal in parts of first floor , on patio weak.
3. make weak signal have d-link wireless n 2.4ghz router upstairs ssid "wireless2.4". connects wired via gigabyte switch. use d-link 4 port gig switch connect mac mini , old airport express described next. mini not need connect on ethernet.
4. old airport express (g only) wireless turned off near d-link router , mini. used send itunes receiver powers patio speakers.

goal upgrade simultaneous n wireless on main floor , on patio. in other words, replace d-link router.

first option buy used airport extreme gen 4 off craigslist $100-125. can replace d-link router , leave else is.

other option buy new airport express , replace d-link router , old airport express g only. in situation use new airport express provide wireless too.

couple questions:

1. why?
2. in either case, should set new device extend current wireless network off airport extreme or duplicate it. signal basement airport extreme quite weak. can extend wireless network on ethernet?
3. can put airport express in bridge mode , use ethernet port mini if want keep wired?

advice.

well, got impatient , bought airport express base station. both wireless channels work great. airplay works great. router can put in bridge mode , can use ethernet port mini. in all, i'm happy. set , forget product.
