2012 MBA using Toshiba SSDs (maybe Samsung too)

the controller used in thsns series tc58nc5hj8gsb-01, or in other words toshiba's new sata 6gb/s controller. it's same controller surfaced in io-data's ssds couple of months ago , used in toshiba's thsnf series well, due later year. shouldn't come surprise toshiba using own toggle-mode nand, , same nand can found inside plextor's m3 , corsair's peformance series pro.

here interesting part: controller has label sandforce on it. toshiba has history of rebranding controllers (back in 2009, toshiba rebranded jmicron's jmf602 controller), it's possible rebranded sandforce sf-2281. toshiba's datasheet not mention sandforce @ all, there no official statement of now.

different connector

when looking closely, can see connector not same in 2010 , 2011 macbook airs. old ssds had pin layout of 12+6 ssd in 2012 mba has 17+7 layout, , outermost pins double wide. means looking @ yet proprietary connector not (currently) compatible other device. biggest downside existing ssd upgrades, such owc's aura, not compatible 2012 airs, although need such upgrades smaller apple offers 512gb ssds. owc did tell working on ssds 2012 airs, not hope gone if need bigger ssd down road.

could toshiba , samsung

last 2 generations of macbook air, apple has used ssds both toshiba , samsung. given popularity of air, 1 supplier may not able provide enough ssds, sourcing ssds 2 different companies has guaranteed consumers won't see empty macbook air shelves. @ point, sample size of 2012 mbas extremely small , 2 torn down mbas (owc , ifixit) have seen have both use toshiba ssds. however, owc claiming have recieved image industry associate shows 2012 mba samsung ssd. working on getting proof of this.

macbook pro retina display uses samsung ssd anand discovered shortly after release. that's pm830 (i.e. 830 series) based ssd because samsung has no other sata 6gb/s controller, although there chance apple has requested custom silicon reason.

i'm pretty sure it's confirmed samsung. team disassembled new mba confirmed think.
