never tried vlc, here's method use. requires programs makemkv (its dvd-ripping functionality free, blu-ray requires serial after trial) , subler (free).
in makemkv (unless you've ripped/encoded video container, in case skip down 'in subler' steps).
step 1: open makemkv dvd in disc drive.
step 2: press button in center, should symbol says dvd - hdd (the picture supposed hard drive). let it's scan/decrption thing, shouldn't take more 10 minutes depending on disc (disney dvd's, example, may take longer).
step 3: makemkv going give list of titles can rip. if list massive, right-click on and, on pop-up menu, select "unselect all" uncheck listed titles. then, select title wish extract audio later clicking check box next (makemkv tells estimated file size next title , length of title in box right of window).
step 4: after selecting box, expand title options clicking arrow next it. uncheck except audio track/s want.
step 5: click "makemkv". makemkv rip movie .mkv file.
step 6: when makemkv finished, close , open subler.
in subler (if you've ripped movie .mkv, .mp4, .m4v, or .mov, can skip straight these steps)
step 7: navigate file>new, or press command+n open new project.
optional step: navigate subler>preferences>audio , check box next "convert ac3 audio aac". optional, increase capability devices.
step 8: in finder, navigate .mkv attained makemkv , drag new window, or navigate file>import>file, or click "+" in subler gui.
step 9: pop menu listing streams inside .mkv (video, audio, subtitle, chapter, etc) drop down. uncheck audio stream wish save.
step 10: checked checkbox next audio track name.
step 11: navigate file>save as... save file. make sure file type audio-mpeg4, not video, otherwise you'll video file no video.
not way it, that's preferred way.
