Apple - First Steps

hi all,

first of apoligies these questions looks damn friendly forum hope first post welcome.

have come here in hope of advice not have macbook pro, "need" , "want" 1 eating away @ me. have walked out retailers 2 of 3 times before pulling old credit card out!

thing stopped me was worried shop keeper try sell me world, when don't quite need of it!

past 20 years have been windows user. have hated mac's , such until got iphone. not long before ipad came along , fell in love interface , way works. did dip andriod market felt wrong , hurried compared apple's products left alone. in nutshell, not fanboy apprichate apple product.

ideally needs judge , apprichate hints here apps etc follows. these can't without above , beyond standard internet applications.

1. office
2. accounts package
3. gaming ( football manager / mame levels - not interested in 3d etc )
4. able run old windows programs know not available on mac's

uses fall following groups.

1. itunes
2. office
3. internet
4. gaming
5. photo management , editing ( , possibly basic video )
6. dev apple account latest ios , try hand @ programming.
7. vmware work related stuff.

know these devices don't have large hard disks need kind of external disk use well, mac point of view have no idea on type need or how connect.

data important me. presently on pc have western digital world book backup across network to. hope can see via potential new laptop. has got experince of sync on mac ?

in windows world, hard disks seem fail @ alarming rate in life ( once per year! ). unlucky.

there way backup hard drive image can on windows if needed roll / restore ?

have been wondering if refurb way go direct apple.

a macbook pro fit you. more capable of handling things have mentioned. gaming, may want consider 15" have higher performance discrete graphics card. it's not gaming laptop means compared customizable pc laptops can handle it.

laptop editing photo , video. you'll come love applications final cut pro , aperture.

aside retina mbp, other models can upgraded larger hard drives. can either or stick external hard drive have. external hard drives sell on market fine. have format mac. disk utility in mac provides easy way format external hd mac or mac/pc use.

hard drive failure among macs slim , covered year date of purchase. still highly recommend applecare warranty extend coverage 3-years. apple's customer services excellent , replace drive if fail within warranty period have.

backup: apple have backup utility called time machine. can backup data using onto external hard drive. can restore device time machine.

far restoring goes, hard drives form apple come recovery partition used solely restore entire device original state.

refurbs indistinguishable new products. save cash. use education discount + gift card apple gives settle new mbps whenever buy.
