Matrox Announces DS-1 Thunderbolt Docking Station for $249

matrox has announced new thunderbolt docking station macbooks , ultrabooks.
at proposed price of $249, matrox ds-1 comes in cheaper belkin's $299 solution due fall. matrox's unit lacks couple of ports (additional thunderbolt, , firewire) found on belkin's dock. ds-1 comes dvi, gigabit ethernet, usb 3.0, (2) usb 2.0, audio output, audio input, , power connectors:

matrox carry high speed usb 3.0 port absent on belkin's unit. addition of port may make dock more appealing pc/ultrabook customers. it's not clear, however, matrox's site if usb 3.0 port functional on mac. (*update)

in past, usb 3.0 support on mac has required installation of 3rd party drivers. these drivers provided hardware manufacturer.

apple has been rumored including usb 3.0 support in next generation macbook pros due summer. if come pass, usb 3.0 port on matrox's dock may work apple's own bundled usb 3.0 drivers.

matrox ds-1 thunderbolt docking station available worldwide in september $249.

update: matrox has informed macbooks able take advantage of usb 3.0 port.

being "tech guy" of house, brother has requested upgrade 4,1 mac pro. has: 2 x 2.26 quad-core xenons 12 gb ram 3 x geforce gt 120 4 x 2 tb hdd's in software raid 10 80 gb ssd in 1 of optical bays boot disk. uses computer video editing, in final cut pro x, he'll dabble in adobe suite. said wants more speed , needs less storage; i.e., doesn't need main drive more 2 tb. budget not issue here, future-proofing is: don't want have upgrade long time. ram upgrade simple enough, right? head on owc , grab 24 or 32 gb of whatever goes 4,1 generation mac pro. video cards know next nothing about. don't quite understand why he's got 3 of them for; monitor 30 in. cinema display. should upgrade video card(s)? maybe raedon 5770 or 5870? feel video editing isn't gpu-intensive, if is, please tell me so. now, fun part storage. figure best solution 4 new ssd's replace 12 tb ones, , stick ssds in raid 0. question is: n...
