I actually tried out the Retina MBP

i'm huge apple fan i'm not bandwagon jumper went find retina mbp in london apple store. turns out not every store in london has play with. in fact think covent garden store has 4 play with. regent street store expected theirs arrive sometime next week!?! low quantities of rmbp then...

firstly, i'm pissed apple dropping 17in retina display thought maybe pixels give me more screen real estate seeing if case. turns out if skip retina , change larger display mode, more space work still prefer 17in (possibly because thats eyes used seeing - arguable point). retina display made more of difference expecting cool (but not criteria upgrading)

next screen glare issues. screen better standard glossy screen still shows reflections. never meant matt screen know supposed replace it. not enough yet.

performance wise unstoppable. had fcpx, aperture, iphoto, itunes , photoshop open , trying stuff on of them @ once , laptop never paused. awesome :)

ssds no brainer traveling photographer me , awesomely quick :)

ports... thunderbolt bit of mehh subject me more need , attached devices cost more can afford there no need 2 of them. interest me in usb3, backwards compatible, fast , cheap. ticks boxes. theres usb connectors on both sides of laptop not one. can't find reason anywhere hdmi port... big raid fw connected i'd need tb fw cable. don't want know how cost if tb cables £40.

doing maths , close laptop want cost me around £2155. thats refurbish 17in mbp , aftermarket 512gb ssd, 8gb ram. has bonus on having 750gb hd if ditch dvd drive. there definite value in having laptop can change parts fail. if buy rmbp w/ applecare £2190.

not going new rmbp benefits me lose: retina display (2/5 on want scale), latest nvidia graphics card (4/5), usb3 (5/5) , better processor (3/5), lightweightness (3-4/5).

tough call. if had buy think buy refurbed 17in in end. if wasn't irreplaceable components have said retina...

im going hold on till octoberish see if 17in make appearance. apple sales guy said me today didn't think sold 1 17in today everyones come in , complained lack of 17in. think demand there existing users , people went 15in because 17in heavy. 17in lighter , more people want it. pointed out sales guy pro guys tend know computers , don't need play them order online not go stores. contributing why never see more 1 (if lucky) mac pro in stores.

op:

liked post. want test out. keep hearing conflicting reports of lag in non-retina mode on rmbps.

think there chance 17" might come in different form. think if apple rmbp 17" so. never heard tim 17" mbp dead - though have missed it.

wonder if next rmbp (2013?) or whatever might have higher native resolution 1440 x 900. great well...
