How can I get my previous system to work with my new Macbook Pro?

i have bought new mbp.

on old mbp ( 2010 ) - running lion 10.7.4 ( latest ).

have taken out old hard disk old mbp - use external drive - have complete copy of files. want able boot drive.

unfortunately - new mbp won't recognise drive bootable* ( mounts fine , see files ).

want 'update' system on drive run on new mbp.

possible , if how?

many thanks

:)

* understand - due new mbp having different chipset etc.
making system old mbp not functional ( despite being latest ).

boot recovery partition , reinstall lion onto external drive. mbpr ships special build of 10.7.4, can installed through own recovery partition.
