Failed hard drive, corruption, and time machine?

i hope right forum, issue spans software/hardware categories.

3 times on last 3 months i've have "invalid node structure" error (mbp mid-2010). once disk utility able fix no problem. last 2 times, however, (three weeks apart) had wipe hard drive , restore time machine backup because ins error seems have been caused deep file system or partition issue--i think ("volume bitmap needs minor repair" 1 of things came when trying repair ins error)

did virus scans clamxav see if have inadvertently infected system , came clean.

getting anxious hard drive failing, took computer evaluated certified repair peeps. replaced drive , got computer today.

when tried use set-up assistant restore system backup, didn't work. got login screen after waiting 2 hours data transfer, not recognize password (i tried several times , know using right 1 account restoring--and generic "password" , leaving blank didn't work either). restarted computer , got stuck on blue screen upon trying boot system.

called repair guy , recommended hard restart blue screen, reboot in repair mode, , reinstall lion, did successfully. said external drive might corrupt , that's why set-up assistant didn't work.

desperately needed data off drive, however, when reinstalled lion, used migration assistant move select files (documents, movies, music, photos, , applications) not whole system. appears have worked can access data on external drive. and, here's weird part, created 2 user accounts on computer (obviously--the old 1 backup , new 1 setting lion clean). when went login old account password worked! why didn't recognize when using set assistant beyond me . . .

questions are:
possible that, after backing hard drive external drive, corruption transferred external drive? , after restoring system external drive during whole 'invalid node structure" fiasco, inadvertently copied corruption internal drive again--so i'm caught in vicious circle of corruption?

also, if there corruption on external drive , copied data (documents, movies, music, photos, , applications) onto new drive in computer, corruption wreak havoc on new drive? or might corruption contained deeper system files (which did not restore . . .right?)? there way tell other waiting ins or other disk error?

sorry if confusing. , in advance advice , suggestions!

i'd guess you're right. system restored corrupt , didn't work, couldn't access data, , led inability boot. installed new system worked, in turn allowed access user info old system unavailable you.

brings point backups: mirror problems , restoring brings problems back. when i've hosed reinstall system, , migrate. perhaps it's not necessary, can save going through went through.
