MBP won't boot (Prohibitory sign) HELP!

just yesterday 2008 mbp gave me prohibitory sign upon restarting. have been using external usb hdds lately haven't deleted system files or whatnot. make long story short, i've tried resetting pram, booting in safe mode (where i'm writing from) , using disk utility repair permissions , check disk. verified hd , said fine.

have not yet tried re-installing snow leopard dvd. if this, want make sure won't delete because haven't used time machine in while can't afford lose data. system files possibly fixed re-installing os?

lastly, do if step doesn't work? don't think hdd going bad. haven't ever dropped or abused in way on life. info/advice! :d
