Thunderbolt Display or Alternative?
hello,
i'm in process of making switch osx @ moment. order bto 13" air in. i've found right type of docking station/stand want. i've gone , bought new bag , woollen sleeve too!
ready (if ignore fact air being stuck in china) apart display i'm going buy.
main use air dual. 9-5 workhorse. running ms office multi browsers open crm apps. i'm @ desk 50% of time (work home), 50% i'm @ clients premisses. @ home, in evening used amateur music recording, , imovie editing, plenty of web - standard stuff suppose. both on lap , on desk depending on use.
plan on running airport express in house hooked stereo downstairs, while having display upstairs soundbar. allow me in home office, working away distractions of family, able around them in evening have mac on lap. run 3tb wireless hard-drive in house
i've tried set scene. here q's
1. considering connectivity tb display gives, essential me?
2. there other displays, non apple, can rival/beat tb similar price. - samsung syncmaster eg?
3. while want buy neat little soundbar use display, speakers on tb. - i've given them listen in pcworld, , not overly impressed didn't have time fiddle.
4. age old "refresh" question. time scales guys see tb getting refresh in? considering lack of usb3? - must said here, not stop me buying one, i'd upgrade @ point of refresh , sell old 1 on ebay.
1. doesn't sound using wireless connection sounds (which slower). setup @ work (not @ home) tb display connected wired ethernet, fw800 drobo, usb scanner, usb drive or 2 depending 1 day - 1 connection it's online in 15-20s. make sure have faster ethernet , data connections - if doing lot of movies , not storing them on small mba ssd going choke point. if see going speedier data storage (tb hard drive) tb display might useful - again can directly connect mba. tb screen nice btw not cheap - me connectivity worth it.

2. understanding 27" dell competitor tb display , many 1 - don't connectivity bells , whistles. @ 24" there more options think.
3. it's similar imac speakers - or other computer speakers - nothing amazed by. cheap external speakers better. warned though - tb display not have sound jack (kinda lame) have plug speakers mini jack on rmbp.
4. knowing when there refresh doesn't know. think usb3 move tied ivy bridge processor more apple liking it. given buying tb doubt making moves anytime update usb 3 - release retina version next when "rumored" imac retinas ready may not year @ least.
