Newb Time Machine Questions

i migrating work stuff pc laptop rmpb (16gb, 256gb ssd).

limiting ssd space constraint require little trial , error right (archive vs active, work vs personal). plan use time machine backing-up stuff external usb 3.0 drive(s).

few quick qs:

1. can backup subset of data/folders using tm?

2. can commingle tm backup , manually archived files on same volume, or should create dedicated partition tm?

3. how tm handle infrequent attachment of external drive?

4. tm able distinguish correct external drive among many? example "work" archive drive (large client databases, etc.) separate "personal" archive drive (lr4 photos, music, etc.) - not want carry personal stuff while travel work, need carry work archive.

5. manual external archive files should back-up yet external drive. suggestions drive-to-drive back-up & sync?

thanks!

not @ time.

2. can commingle tm backup , manually archived files on same volume, or should create dedicated partition tm?

yes. can share filesystem , use backup multiple computers.

3. how tm handle infrequent attachment of external drive?

time machine attempt backup files on set schedule (no control). if drive isn't present when attempts make backup should one-time error message stating drive not found. once reconnect drive, can manually click option start backing up. i'm not sure if restart automatically though. not biggie, click tm clock in bar , select "backup now."

4. tm able distinguish correct external drive among many? example "work" archive drive (large client databases, etc.) separate "personal" archive drive (lr4 photos, music, etc.) - not want carry personal stuff while travel work, need carry work archive.

yes. knows name of filesystem (time machine).

5. manual external archive files should back-up yet external drive. suggestions drive-to-drive back-up & sync?

i use crash plan. allows online local backups, automagically.
