Lawmakers furious over China-made U.S. Olympic uniform

the controversy surrounding team usa's chinese-made uniforms olympics opening ceremony raged thursday washington politicians jumped fashion fray. criticized u.s. olympic committee approving uniforms.

sen. harry reid, d-nev., said usoc should "ashamed" blue blazers, white pants , berets american athletes wear manufactured in china. "they should take uniforms, put them in big pile , burn them," reid said.

other lawmakers critical of apparel designed ralph lauren. "you'd think they'd know better," house speaker john boehner, r-ohio, said of usoc.

added sen. bernie sanders: "the olympics time when americans take great pride in our nation's top athletes strive gold. @ time when millions of americans unemployed, there no reason why u.s. olympic uniforms not being manufactured in u.s."

usoc spokesman patrick sandusky defended uniforms, calling ralph lauren "iconic american company."

u.s. athletes didn't have same sense of outrage politicians.

"it's global world live in," olympic beach volleyball player todd rogers, 2008 gold medalist, told usa today sports. "i there bigger issues worry ralph lauren has opening ceremonies clothes made."

swimmer missy franklin said won't march in july 27 opening ceremony because olympic swimming competition begins next day. while wasn't asked issue of clothes being made in china, franklin called uniforms "absolutely adorable."

"everything ralph lauren did so, cool," franklin said @ u.s. swim team's media day in knoxville, tenn. "to able wear those, or have opportunity to, exciting."
