How to deal with a large iTunes library

hi folks. new here, been lurking awhile.

using mediamonkey on pc couple years, decided switch itunes. i've been ripping cds (again!), , have ~ 40k files/700+gb (all music) - apple lossless. project continuing, , there still couple thousand cds go. haven't thought doing movies yet.

plan on getting imac update announced. thought i'd 2tb hd , external drive, won't large enough. 3tb hd right, don't imagine they'll offer one. so, couple questions:

1. can 3 tb drive installed in imac?
2. should not bother internal drive , 2 3tb external hds (1 backup)?
3. if so, 2x3tb drive (like lacie in apple store) option?
4. finally, tips on dealing large library in itunes? not thinking organization...more possible need break down separate libraries. itunes has slowed down drastically library size has increased (a windows issue?). seems chokes trying handle data.

much.

1. yes, can install 3tb drives in new imacs, installing hds in current imacs not faint of heart. if you're used taking apart computers it's not big of deal, involve removing glass , screen , removing dozen or small screws.

2. since imac stationary it's not big deal have itunes media on external drive, far easier taking apart computer.

3. i've not worked 2x3tb drives. owc has reputation though, may want check out offerings.

4. have 1st gen mac pro (2 2ghz xeons, it's getting ancient @ point) 8gb of ram. itunes library 90k songs, 1.5tb, 70k of songs alac. there occasional slowness, it's not bad. ram key, itunes taking 800mb of ram, , it's sitting there. recommend minimum of 8gb run super large itunes libraries, 16gb may overkill, ram cheap if can afford it, go ahead , that.
