Connecting Instrument to GarageBand

hello all.

purchased electric cello , guitar-to-usb connection (behringer ucg102), avoid having purchase full-blown amp i'm going practice with. after opening box, opened garageband , tried work, (as title suggests) i'm not getting input.

other posts had suggestions brought me far, however, still no dice. have input in gb set usb codec, output set built-in interface, input set "mono 2", , monitor on. @ first, thought might instrument not interacting connection (the instrument has passive pickup, freaked me out second), until opened sys prefs , saw computer receives signal interface every time strum (about 1/3 1/2 bars on average). leads me believe gb not receiving signal.

i'm ready rip hair out on want sit down , play already. guys can give appreciated.

relevant specs:

15" mbp os 10.6.8 (snow leopard)
instrument: ns design nxt-5 cello
garageband '09 (5.1)

edit: tested instrument audacity , receives signal , can record it, know sure it's gb now.

you list 2 "inputs". 1 counts "input source:" right above "monitor" right above "recording level" of in browse tab of real instrument.

have recording level @ maximum , track not muted , have clicked record button. volume on track turned full. there @ least 3 volume control 1) track, 2) recording level, 3) system volume.

had not said audacity can "hear" instrument i'd have suggested maybe broken, cable or (i hate say) cheap audio interface.
