10.6.8: Open dialogs non-functional/closing/crashing

since updating 10.6.8 (with combo update) i've encountered issue open dialog:

1. in logic 8 (among other apps), click open, click through couple of drives/folders , open dialog closes immediately.
2. in chrome, after second click crashes application.
3. in photoshop , seemingly other apps, left-side drive hierarchy clickable (ie: none of files/folders in main window area clickable)

serious issue.

did follow apple's recommendation reinstall prokit 7.0 , have verified/repaired permissions on startup disk, without effect. tried disabling of os addons pathfinder, steermouse, defaultfolder etc...nada.

i'm running on imac core 2 duo 2ghz 3gb ram.

ideas on culprit might be?

ATV3 5.1 channel ?

no service after redsnow jailbreaking
